Sensitivity of charged particle activation analysis for long-lived radioactive nuclide determination

Oshima, Masumi*; Yamaguchi, Yurie*; Asai, Masato; Tsukada, Kazuaki; Goto, Jun*; Bamba, Shigeru*; Bi, C.*; Morimoto, Takao*

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 56(9-10), p.866 - 872, 2019/09

 Times Cited Count:1 Percentile:11.15(Nuclear Science & Technology)

Sensitivity of charged particle activation analysis with 8 MeV proton beam was studied for determination of 35 long-lived radioactive nuclides. Reaction cross sections for those nuclides were estimated with ALICE-91 code and isomer yield ratios were estimated from those of neighboring isotopes by taking into account their spins and parities. It was found that the proposed charged particle activation analysis should show high sensitivity for the determination of several hardly measurable nuclides with long half-lives such as $$^{135}$$Cs, $$^{244}$$Pu, $$^{129}$$I, $$^{126}$$Sn, $$^{93}$$Mo, $$^{107}$$Pd, $$^{236}$$U, $$^{248}$$Cm, and $$^{237}$$Np.

By combining neutron activation analysis with multiple $$gamma$$-ray detection, we have proved better sensitivity and resolution for the trace element analysis than the ordinary single $$gamma$$-ray detection method. We now try to apply the multiple $$gamma$$-ray detection method to the prompt $$gamma$$-ray analysis (PGA). We have established a new cold neutron beam line for PGA in Japan Research Reactor, JRR-3M, at Tokai establishment of Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute(JAERI). It consists of a beam shutter, a beam attenuator, a $$gamma$$-ray detector array, a sample changer, and a beam stopper. We construct a high-efficiency $$gamma$$-ray detector array specially designed for this purpose. Its performance has been evaluated with the Monte Carlo simulation code, GEANT 4.5.0.

Airborne dust samples were collected with a high-volume sampler at a fixed point in JAERI-Tokai for three years. Recently at JAERI-Tokai, a number of pine trees to arrest sand shifting was cut down. We analyzed the variation in elemental composition of the dust collected before and after felling the trees. It found, from the two-dimentional plots of ratio of elemental concentration such as Sc/Na-Cl/Na ratios, almost all samples consisted of mixture of sea-salt and soil. There were some differences between the elemental composition of the dust collected before and after felling the trees.

$$gamma$$-$$gamma$$ coincidence of multiple $$gamma$$-rays from the radioisotopes produced by neutron capture reactions was measured with a array of 19-Ge detectors with BGO Compton suppressors, GEMINI-II. Using multiparameter spectrometry, high sensitive determination of iridium in geological samples and I-129 in environmental samples were carried out at GEMINI.

Deposition of radionuclides and stable elements in Tokai-mura

Ueno, Takashi; Amano, Hikaru

JAERI-Data/Code 2003-004, 49 Pages, 2003/03

JAERI-Data-Code-2003-004.pdf:4.55MB

This report presents the data of deposition of radionuclides (Sep. 1993-March 2001) and stable elements (Sep.1993-Oct.1995) in Tokai-mura. To evaluate the migration of radionuclides and stable elements migration from the atmosphere to the ground surface, atmospheric deposition samples were collected from 1993 to 2001 with three basins (distance to grand surface were 1.5m, 4m, 10m) set up in the enclosure of JAERI in Tokai-mura, Ibaraki-ken, Japan. Monthly samples were evaporated to dryness to obtain residual samples and measured with a well type Ge detector for 7Be, 40K, 137Cs and 210Pb. According to the analysis of radioactivity, clear seasonal variations with spring peaks of deposition weight (dry) and deposition amounts of all objective radionuclides were found. Correlation analysis of deposition data also showed that these radionuclides can be divided into two groups. A part of dried sample was irradiated to reactor neutrons at JRR-4 for determination of stable element's deposition.
